Born into a Sikh family, Khushwant Singh was born in Hadali, Khushab District, Punjab (now in Pakistan). His father was Sir Sobha, who would go on to testify against Bhagat Singh and Veeran Bai. His father merely made up the date of Khushwant admission at Modern School, New Delhi, on February 2, 1915, as birth and death were not officially documented during that time. Sardar Ujjal Singh, his uncle, was the governor of Tamil Nadu and Punjab from 1895 until 1983.

Singh Khushwant wrote both fiction and nonfiction books, mostly in English. Among his best-selling works was Train to Pakistan, which was released in 1956 and brought both international recognition and the Groove Press Award in 1954. Essays on India’s Emergency, established in 2004 under the title “Why I Supported the Emergency”, was his second major publication.  Additionally, he wrote I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale, released in 1959, The Portrait of a Lady: Gathered Stories, a collection of short stories, and books like Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Fall of Sikh Kingdom. 

In addition to these, he wrote and published A History of Sikhs, a classic two-volume work on the Sikh past. Other famous novels include Truth, Love, and a Little Malice, an autobiography published in 2002, Scotch and Scholarship, and In the Company of Women, released in 1999. Remarkably, he wrote both good & bad at the age of 98. He co-wrote the book with Huma Qureshi.
