About the Professional Work of APJ Abdul Kalam 

Over the years, he has also worked as a professor at different universities. Unfortunately, on July 27, 2015, while speaking at the Indian Management Institute in Shillong, he suddenly collapsed because his heart stopped beating.

In 2007, he left office and was followed by Pratibha Patil as the first woman president of the country. After retiring from the presidency, Kalam decided to spend the rest of his life promoting scientific and technological advancement making India an advanced nation. 

Despite being a Muslim, Kalam’s name was suggested by the Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) NDA, and he had covered enough ground before the public to the extent that even the leading opposition party, the Indian National Congress, also fronted his name.

In July of 2002, Kalam took Office as India’s new president, being the eleventh to hold office but with no real powers, having won the election with ease. In 2002, India’s then-ruling party, known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), forwarded Kalam’s name as their nominee to replace President Kocheral Raman Naryana.

Agricultural productivity was supposed to be hiked, technology was to be embraced as a means of propelling economic growth forward, and health care, along with education, would be available to everyone according to this strategy.

Kalam floated the idea in 1998. He hoped it would help develop India fully in two decades, as it was a less developed country by then. His significant contribution to India becoming a nuclear weapons state following the tests conducted in 1998 catapulted him to the status of a national hero, despite the anxiety that they generated within global society.

Kalam was the scientific adviser to the Minister of Defense from 1992 to 1997 and was subsequently appointed as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India with the status of Cabinet Minister during the years 1999–2001.

APJ Abdul Kalam Won the Award in 2024

The president’s office has announced that Karpoori Thakur, socialist leader and chief minister of the state of Bihar twice in the 1970s, will be awarded the country’s highest civilian honor posthumously on January 23, 2024. In his time as Chief Minister, Thakur championed those who were marginalized in society, hence introducing the concept of “reservations,” a series of affirmative action programs meant for other backward classes (OBCs), as described by the Indian government concerning those who receive inadequate education opportunities and are socially oppressed. The President made an announcement one day before Thakur was born, one hundred years ago. On February 3, the President’s Office and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Bharat Ratna would be conferred on Lal Krishna Advani, a founder member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and a former Deputy Prime Minister of India.

This year, three more Bharat Ratna awards were posthumously announced by the president’s office and prime minister’s office on 9 February. Geneticist and administrator Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan joined Congress leader Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao, as well as independence fighter political leader Chaudhuri Charan Singh, who had also served as Prime Minister of India in the past.

Swaminathan is known for India’s green revolution, therefore, when it comes to significantly increasing the amount of wheat and rice. They can be harvested in this country as well as pushing India towards self-sufficiency.  Rao had been pushing economic liberalization in India by the early 1990s, Charan Singh, on the other hand, fought for the country’s independence and was briefly appointed the prime minister from 1979 to 1990.
