Subhas Chandra Bose son of a prominent Bengali lawyer Janakinath Bose studied in Presidency College, Calcutta where he was expelled in 1916 for nationalist activities, and the Scottish Churches College (graduating in 1919). Further, he was sent to the University of Cambridge in England for Indian Civil Services in 1920. In April 1921, hearing about nationalist upheavals in India, he stepped down from his candidacy and rushed to return to India. He was financially and emotionally supported by an elder brother, Sarat Chandra Bose (1889–1950), a rich lawyer based in Calcutta, and a politician associated with the Indian National Congress (Congress Party). Some of his political activities are as follows:
- Bose adhered to the non-cooperation policy initiated by Mohandas K. Gandhi, who had transformed the Indian National Congress into a successful pacifistic body.
- Gandhi recommended to Bose that he work under Chitta Ranjan Das, a politician from Bengal. He became a youth teacher, an author, and a commander of the Bengal Congress volunteers.
- His activities led to his imprisonment in December 1921. In 1924, he was appointed the head officer of the Calcutta Civil Enterprise with Das as the president. Thereafter, he was deported to Burma (Myanmar) because of suspicions about his involvement in secret revolutionary movements.
- When released in 1927, he came back to find Bengal Congress issues in disarray following Das’s death and Bose was elected president of the Bengal Congress. Not long afterward, he and Jawaharlal Nehru became joint general secretaries of the Indian National Congress.
- They represented the more militant left wing of the party as opposed to its moderate right-wing Gandhian factions.
