Who is Baba Siddique?

Ziauddin Siddique, famously known as Baba Siddique is a popular politician of India.  He was the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the constituency of Vandre West Assembly in Maharashtra. Additionally, he was the MLA for three consecutive terms, 1999, 2004, and 2009, and in 2004-08, was designated the position of Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies (FDA) in the Maharashtra Government. On 12 October 2024, he was shot dead by 3 attackers. 

Before his demise, he was the Chairperson & Senior Vice President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee & Parliamentary Board of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and worked as a  Municipal Corporator for two consecutive terms from 1992-1997. On 8 February 2024, he gave his resignation from the Indian National Congress prime membership and on 12 Feb 2024, linked with the Nationalist Congress Party headed by Ajit Pawar.

In 1999, he was designated as an MLA from the Bandra West Assembly Constituency and resumed his position in 2004 and 2009. From 2000-2004, he became the Chairman of the MHADA Mumbai Board under the Indian Government. Later, from 2004 to 2008, he claimed the role of Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour, and FDA.

Apart from being a political leader, he established himself as a businessman. In 2004, Baba Siddique established Zears Developers Pvt Ltd. Among various other projects,  one of his first major projects was the Link Square Mall on Linking Road in Bandra. Other prominent projects include the redevelopment of the plot on 16th Road into Shiv-Asthan Heights, Maqba Heights near Pali Naka (his family’s current residence), and Vertical Bliss at Almeida Park.  He gained a huge spotlight through his protest against Two redevelopment projects, Sant Dnyaneshwar Nagar and Bharat Nagar in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a posh location in Mumbai.

In 2017, Baba Siddique got entangled in a money-laundering case when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took hold of 33 flats worth around Rs 400 crore. It was done due to the mismanagement of a slum redevelopment project, near Bandra Reclamation referred to as the “Jamaat-e-Jamhooria”, by Pyramid Developers.

As per the reports of government officials, the plot was sold in 90 Crores by developers to Satra group and it was decided mutually to share the flats, sold in 1800-2000 Crores. Besides, it was reported that Mr Siddique was involved in this and wrongly used his power as chairman of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) as he decided to expand the Floor Space Index.

Baba Siddique Murder: Who was Involved?

On 12 October 2024, Baba Siddique was murdered by three people in Mumbai and declared dead in Lilavati Hospital. As per various sources, he was fired with 3 bullets at 9:30 pm near the workplace of his son, Zeeshan, serving the position of MLA of Bandra East. 

As part of the police investigation, Two people were arrested, named Gurmail Baljit Singh, who belonged to Haryana, and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Then, two more names,  Mohammad Jaseen Akhtar and Shivkumar Gautam were also registered.  Praveen Lonkar was also taken into custody due to offering logistics support and referred his brother Shubham Lonkar as the main person behind the shooting plan.  

On 15 October 2024, the fourth person Harishkumar Balakram Nisad from Uttar Pradesh was captured. Later,  confirmation was made by Mumbai Police about the involvement of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang in the murder of Baba Siddique.
